Looks like raintree is now open to pre-orders for their raintree select cultivar. As I understand it, Carmine and Raintree Select are the two largest fruited cultivars so I’ll preorder at least one of the raintree select. I’m curious if I’ll get increased yields with cross pollination.
…and its sold out before I got a chance to order mine lol. sigh…
You can easily graft carmine/tillamook to whatever you have. As others have mentioned they take even ugly grafts pretty easy. This is what I did, I grafted Carmine onto my sweet scarlet, unfortunately it didn’t grow enough to have much for scions yet (grafted this summer or spring) but next year I’ll have plenty of scions if you still need it.

Bunt Ridge still has some available along with a variety called Sunrise Ruby which was not available when I ordered mine.
Anyone know how large Sunrise is compared to Tillamook. All four varieties of their listings indicates they are large. It would be nice to have another larger variety like or larger than Tillamook.
From what I have gathered it is new to Burnt Ridge and they don’t have any information on it. According to a Facebook group, Burnt Ridge indicated that it is a patented variety from Korea but otherwise had no additional information. I have ordered it for Spring 2025 so if all goes well, I can share information on it once my plant fruits. I also have Tillamook from Whitman farms (planted Spring 2024), Red Gem (One Green World Spring 2024) and Sweet scarlet (One Green World Spring 2024).
Thanks
I already have 2 Carmine/Tillamook plants in their second leaf. Scroll up in the thread and you will see the purchase history and pictures.
I was looking to add (and alerting others of the availability of) the ‘Raintree Select’ Cultivar as it was available for pre-order. I added it to my cart but last night was my daughter’s 8th birthday and so we had a bunch of plans so when we were finally back home and done, I crashed without completing my order.
I don’t graft and I don’t plan to get started anytime soon. Maybe one day. I’ve toyed with the idea of trying grafting on Goumi, since I have two grown plants, and it may be the only way to get ‘Pippi’ for now (I’m on the waitlist for a plant from @JohannsGarden) but while others told me they were successful in grafting, I saw no indication it was easy for someone who might struggle with it like myself.
‘Raintree Select’ Is sold exclusively by Raintree Nursery as a potted or bare rooted plant. No scion wood is available that I know of. I’m not sure if it is patented.
I have two Carmine/Tilamook already and no interest in Red Gem or Sweet Scarlet. As is documented here and elsewhere, Sweet scarlet and Red Gem have much smaller fruit. Verified “large” fruited cultivars are just Pippi, Carmine/Tilamook, and Raintree Select. Looks Like in addition to @Cgardener, @CoreFlex was going to get Sunrise Ruby, so if they can confirm it is a larger fruited cultivar, I might add it to the collection another year. I don’t know of anyone else growing it.
I have utmost faith in you, it’s not a tough thing to do. Get grafting bud!
I don’t need faith, I need a new central nervous system. click the links.
I saw, I obviously don’t know the extent of things, but it’s not brain surgery; there is plenty of wiggle room for failure. Especially with things like Goumi and mulberry, if you can use a fork you can graft using the cleft method. If you can’t use a knife then I understand
The Forum shows when people click the links. one click on the first, “I don’t graft” none on the second “I don’t plan to get started anytime soon” Click the second one if you want to know the extent of things.
I still say cleft grafting doesn’t require fine motor skills. Chip budding, and whip and tongue does. But only you know you, but I have the highest rates of success with cleft grafts (likely due to me not being great at perfecting my cuts also)
But don’t hurt yourself for sure
I probably try grafting onto the Tillamook I have (planted in spring) in a few years and maybe beg some scion wood from someone.
I’m hoping for a yellow fruited goumi at some point that isn’t an autumn olive.
Understanding that you aren’t looking to graft but just wanted to note that England’s Orchard and Nursery might have Raintree Select as a scion option. I also see they have other rare varieties like Hidden Springs, Wang Bo, Sherwood, Monez, and Chorus. There isn’t much information on these rare varieties but from what I saw online Monez is reported to taste good and Wang Bo is a large fruit variety. lmvian on this forum is growing out seeds of Wang Bo and working to root cuttings so we may learn more about that one if lmvian is successful and shares the results (The other Goumi - #25 by lmvian)
Also just noting that cheap grafting tools on amazon look to be on sale for Black Friday (ex Amazon.com : FUNTECK 2-in-1 Grafting Tools Pruner Kit, V-Graft Omega-Graft and U-Graft, Perfect for Fruit Tree Grafting, Including Grafting Tapes, Grafting Knife & Replacement Blades : Patio, Lawn & Garden). I’m going to try grafting for the first time this spring using one that I ordered so I’ll see how they are. These might be awful, but I figured for $20 it would be worth experimenting. I realize you have circumstances that make grafting an unattractive option but wonder if one of these tools along with a small folding table or stool to brace against might allow you to give it a try.
I have found the grafting tools to be only useful if your scion matches perfectly to the grafting tool size. However it may be a good option for some and in those perfect sized scions
That makes sense. There is no way to adjust the tools so they can only handle certain sizes. I am mostly going to do apple scions on rootstock this spring, so hopefully the sizes match the tool. If not, I’ll need to use the knife.
Apples take really easy in my limited apple grafting experience. You should be fine
@EJh I have not seen a yellow fruited goumi. If you want that and autumn olive is not invasive in your area, then I think you can create one by 1) crossing goumi with one of the yellow autumn olives then 2) crossing those F2 with each other or back crossing to the yellow autumn olive. It might take a few generations to get the traits you want but I think the starting plants would be fairly easy to obtain ( Charlie’s Golden Autumn Olive - One Green World and Amber Autumn Olive ™ - One Green World would have the yellow genetics).
I’m hoping someone else does the work
I have thought about getting one of those tho. But that would be a long long term project
