Goumi, Elaeagnus multiflora, Cultivar Trialing

hello! would you happen to sell any varieties like Wang Bo or Daiougoumi – varieties that produce fruit that’s larger than the Tillamook/Carmine? Where is Pippi in terms of fruit-size? thanks!

I don’t grow any ‘Wang Bo’ or ‘Daiougoumi’. From what I’ve seen in pictures they make very large fruit, but don’t appear to set such heavy crops as ‘Carmine’ and ‘Pippi.’ The fruits of ‘Pippi’ average only slightly larger than ‘Carmine’ (at least they do under my growing conditions).

thank you @JohannsGarden

England’s Orchard can sell you scion for Wang Bo, and one called Chorus that was elsewhere identified as potentially a Daiagoumi. He may have a couple other less common ones, but I haven’t looked at his list in a while. He has a variety of Autumn Olives too.

He has a lot of stuff that seems to have never been spread in a lot of categories. I’m sure there is reason for most of that, but it’s worth a look for collectors.

thank you @Mtncj . this evening i read most of this thread. thank you for the prompt – yup, Chorus potentially is Daiagoumi!
what an amazing thread.
i just finished geeking on Jujube and now, Goumi! it’s unfortunate that such stellar cultivars of Jujube and Goumi are virtually impossible to buy.
thanks again!

First time posting, and I want to echo the comment above, this is an amazing thread! Thank you for sharing all of the information, a lot of which cannot be found anywhere else on the internet.

I’m interested in breeding goumis as well, and I’ll start my own thread on the topic soon. Right now I’m in the collecting known cultivars phase, and so far I have Red Gem, Sweet Scarlet, Carmine/Tillamook, Catherine’s Find, and several seedlings of Wang Bo (picked up from England’s). I’ve ordered several Hidden Springs seedlings, Sherwood, and Sunrise Ruby for spring 2026. That only leaves a few other cultivars available in the U.S., which I’ll be interested in pursuing, but I don’t want to bite off more than I can chew in one year.

I’ll have a lot of questions and will certainly be looking for feedback from the more experienced members here, so thank you ahead of time for the support!

Can someone fill in some info on Forest Farm? I’ve seen it mentioned a few times here and elsewhere on the internet. I assume it’s from the nursery in Williams, OR? They sell this unnamed goumi, but it’s currently sold out.

They also sell Tillamook, also sold out.

Their website refers to the unnamed one as “GOUMI/CHERRY ELAEAGNUS” and the Tillamook as “SELECT GOUMI”, so that adds to the puzzle.

I also found Sylvatica Forest Farm in Mt Vernon, KY, and they sell scion wood for a “Select Goumi”. I emailed them a while back asking about it but no reply yet.

Hi Blackrose. I’m in the US so can’t get plants to you. There are a few growers in Austria and The Ukraine that have these cultivars and many more.

I have been growing Forest Farm select since 2020. It’s by far my best cultivar of 12. It’s size is medium (same size as Tillamook/Carmine), highly productive and has the strongest taste. One trait I like about is the berries will ripen unevenly, allowing harvesting over a full month. Others ripen more evenly and are done in two weeks.

Thanks @Grapevine! Do you know if your Forest Farm is the same as one of the links above?

It is not from those sources.

I’m pretty sure I was eating both ‘Carmine’ AND ‘Pippi’ last year for closer to a month than two weeks… Longer if you count the leftover berries which are still tasty as they start to dry on the bush.
