Striped pears - research is needed

As we see growing popularity for striped pears we are also left with many unanswered questions. We will grow them out and find out more.

Are either of these the pears @tonyOmahaz5 has?

@PharmerDrewee are we any closer to finding out if these are red Zao Su Li

I managed to locate both red striped and green striped for grafting this year. I’m suspecting there are others and that we can make more with hybridization of these pears. I’m trying to learn more about them now. I think we need to do some experimenting. We should be able to send scions next year. I can send you a partial stick of each if you want to see what you can do with them.

I have a small tree grafted with a scion from Tony. It is suspected to be Red Zao Su Li. I also have the double flowered Vermont Cabot. Wonder what a red striped pear with double blossoms in spring would look like? For that matter, what would a red striped Warren look and taste like?

You and @tonyOmahaz5 and @39thparallel are going to get me in trouble with growing more pears. I’m not sure where Tony has been lately. I am only adding 15-20 more types this year.

A man needs something to be passionate about. Pears are a good choice.

I have several different pears with unique traits that I would love to combine. Double blossom, red stripe, fireblight resistant, large delicious pears, red/orange fall foliage

I’m hoping these are somewhat fireblight resistant. @Fusion_power my suspicion is The very rare Yu hong red striped pear yu hong is the pear that came from sophia that Tony shared with you. I’m pretty sure red Zao Su Li is a different variety now. I’m confused and will need to grow them out to be sure.

I definately have

red Zao Su Li

I definately dont have

red yu hong

It is not very likely. Fireblight resistance seems to be a quantitative trait where multiple genes contribute. Only highly selected lines seem to show it at a high level. We will eventually have to incorporate fireblight resistance from callery into edible pears. Why? Because it appears to have a slightly different genetic mechanism than the resistance in most other pear species/varieties.

I dont know chinese, though i know

Li = pear

Yu Hong = Red Striped

What i read in european markets is

" * A special Chinese variety of Asian pear with dark red fruits that are streaked with yellow.

  • Red-leaved mutation of the variety Zao Su Li
  • The fruits are juicy, have a crispy flesh, can weigh up to 350 grams, can be collected from September.
  • Strong growing, high yielding variety with excellent disease resistance."

You found it on a Hungarian website. It appears to be circulating in Europe to some extent. My son lives in Romania and can probably purchase a tree.

To me it seems the only difference is Yu Hong is a sport and has red leaves. If thats true your tree should have red leaves.

I had first thought the stripes meant it was a chimera?

Started this topic to answer that Chimera pear fruit

My tree has red leaves. If you dig around, there is an article on the red color in Zao Su Li which describes the gene causing the color. It is an unstable mutation which can revert to normal green. As such, it will probably produce green offspring. Red offspring would probably not occur.

Than we think yours is yu hong. I’m still confused i think there is much more we need to know here.

I’m not convinced Yu Hong is the same as Red Zao Su Li. Fruit shape appears to be different. However, it really does not matter. I have whatever Tony sent me last spring. I transplanted the tree in the corner where my driveway intersects with the road. Everyone driving by will see it.

Those look very cool. We will have to touch base soon. I’m going with @39thparallel to demonstrate grafting for a group in may. You should go with us if it slows down for you.

If you want to tantalize yourself, look up a pear named ā€œPremP109ā€.

Tony, is that first pear Nanguo?
