Today I was squaring a building my friend was working on. Between working on paperwork I was holding roof supports. Iām the type of person who spent most of my day thinking and planning. When I design things I want them to be the best they can be. I prefer quality over price. I found in the long run quality always out performs short term savings. Cost never leaves my mind and I do my best to keep price down as long as it does not sacrifice quality. I also attribute success to God as he guides my hand in all things. Iām not the type of person who you think of as Christian unless you think about my actions. Iām the type of person who knows exactly how Iām going to do something. I want the best for everyone else.

Many ask who I am and what I do. I develop fruit trees among other things
Many of you remember this thread New Apple Seedling Varieties .The Clarkās crabapple as i mentioned fruits like clusters of grapes. Today at the @39thparallel orchard and Nursery you can see the clusters are heavy on these apples. They were top worked with these apples 2 or 3 years ago. Every year these seedlings are gaining popularity in Kansas. Here is Mike removing some damaged fruit and taking a minute to let me grab a few photos. Years ago Mike saw these at my property and has grown tā¦
Clark was so kind to offer his leftover scions. Hereās what was a Red Bartlett I picked up at Wal-mart and yesterday I removed the last nurse branches of the Bartlett. I now have a 5-6ā āSmall Yellow Pear.ā I also have a great supply of bench grafts Thanks Clark, youāre a good man.

P.s. Harrow Sweet is the only pollenizer Clark knows for it.

Itās that time of year again to start harvesting some of my seedling apples for making cider. I did not bother to spray them this year and they donāt look terrible all things considered. We will slice off the best parts for the cider and plant all the cores peels etc under a few inches of soil. I wish everyone would plant some apples to do this with. This is the best part of life. I use a juicer to make the cider rather than a press for small amounts [image]
One of my many hobbies is growing new varieties of apples from seeds. This year I have two of my seedlings that reached fruiting age that I thought you might like to see. As your likely aware I grow many unique rare or heirloom varieties of plants. These were grown with no spray since they were not expected to fruit so they do show insect damage. [image]
Itās that time of year again in Kansas for the peak blackberry season. Before 7:00 am we picked 2 gallons. Blackberry season started about a week and a half ago with a light crop. The crop will progressively increase until the 25th or so and then declines the way it started. I planted a couple of acres 20 years ago. How are the blackberries doing in your area? [image] [image]
Crop is fairly rough but getting a crop is better than not getting one. The harvest is sparse. I picked just over 30 gallons and wound up with 10 gallons of waste apples I worked into the garden. The harvest came off 4 production trees. Typically those trees yield 1-2 bushels each. The small white bowl is a seedling apple I grew from seed⦠[image]
These red Bartlettās are small this year but sweeter than sugar! They are more of a red blushing Bartlett. Deer, raccoons etc. have been eating some of them as some pears fall on the ground or on low hanging branches. Expect to still get 20 gallons in the buckets. The windfalls help to keep the wildlife alive during this drought when all my neighbors had complete crop failures with their cereal crops. My fruit crops are a miracle during the most severe drought since the dirty thirties. A dust bā¦
Incredible harvest today August 3rd of Clapps favorite! Picked a 5 gallon bucket already! Others are ripe but im getting to them as i can! Clapps favorite is an incredibly difficult pear to pick at the right time. Yesterday they were not ready but the green june beetles attacked telling me the sugar content was increasing so today i did the tilt test again and they are ripe ! These will rot from the inside out so if you grow them be mindful of the timing. The pear will look perfect on the outsiā¦
Harrow delight is the first pear to ripen this year on August 1st. Nice pears absolutely delicious when grown in this hot climate. Looking back pears seldom ripen in the same order. Iāve been documenting many varities closely since 2015. Iāve grown pears most of my life in some capacity but learned the importance of good record keeping about 6 years ago. Photos and data are imperative to growing fruit well.

Pawpaw are not exactly easy to grow here because they need shade when they are babies and water all the time. Seemed impossible to me at first but then I dug them a pond to grow beside. Note the reflection of the overhanging shade trees in the water [image] [image] [image] [image]
