Wildlife in our gardens

I love our anoles! This one was in the ornamental garden at the house today, but most of the trees in the orchard and beds in the vegetable garden are home to at least one too.

I have no idea.

Came across a welcome visitor yesterday. We don’t usually see king snakes, I hope it sticks around.

It’s not a great photo because I took it through a window in bad lighting. But I caught this woodpecker nibbling on my strawberries.

A little bumblebee photoshoot on a crocus on May 2, 2026. There was still a fair bit of snow around, but the crocus and bumblebees weren’t perturbed.

likely his 1st. feed of the season. my haskaps / willows started blooming a few days ago. its been a cool spring. was out in the yard yesterday. it was low 60’s and windy but that didnt stop the bumbles. indigo treat / gem were covered with maybe 2 dozen of 2 subspecies of them.

The crocus definitely would have been a first meal. It has been a slow, cold spring which has resulted in willows waking up only about 2 weeks ago. My haskap would have typically been in flower a week ago, but are only just now waking up. I’m expecting them to flower in 5-10 days.

I have at least one Baltimore Oriole and an Indigo Bunting around in my wooded areas. I have been trying to get a photo all day long. So far, no luck. They stay mostly in the trees until just fly from tree to tree.

I’m excited to see a lot of lady bug larva eating aphids on an apple tree.

Not exactly in my garden, but trying to graft with a cat nearby is difficult.

that was me last week trying to graft some trees. my toulouse goslings were constantly chewing on my pants and managed to untie both my boots. id shoo them away and they would come right back. worse than dogs. they even follow me around the yard on the tractor. sorry. no pics.

well i was wrong it’s Robins. not sure why the littler bird was so mad at me. maybe there’s a nest of theirs here someplace too.

A few days ago I noticed what looked like some type of very small amphibian eggs in one of my container water gardens. Then today I found these tiny tadpoles in another one. I saw some in the original tub with the eggs and the eggs seem to be evolving and getting close to hatching.

Any idea what they are? Spring peepers or maybe some type of tree frog? Not American toad, which are pretty much gone from my area sadly and not the green frogs that frequent the tubs and my little pond.
